Democratic socialism is a political ideology that supports the establishment of a democratically run and decentralized form of socialist economy. Modern democratic socialists vary widely in their views of how a proper socialist economy should function, but all share the goal of abolishing capitalism. They also prioritize democracy as an end over democracy as a means, and some democratic socialists see revolution as an acceptable method of achieving the democracy they desire.
The Richmond Democratic Socialists of America are dedicated to building a multiracial, working class movement rooted in democratic socialism. Our strategy acknowledges the class structure of the U.S. society. This class structure means that there is a basic conflict of interest between those sectors with enormous economic power and the vast majority of the population. We are the working class.
Democratic Socialism envisions a humane social order based on popular control of resource production, economic planning, equitable distribution of resources, gender and racial equality, and non-oppressive relationships.
The Richmond Democratic Socialist of America reject an economic order based on private profit, alienated labor, unequal wealth and power, discrimination based on race and sex, and brutality and violence in defense of the status quo.
When you act alone your actions can be ignored or undone in an instant.
When you are a member of a group participating in struggle, politicians ignore you at their peril.
Our conception of Democratic Socialism is rooted in the belief that human beings should be free to develop to their fullest potential. We understand that public policies should be determined by popular participation, not wealth, and that individual liberties should be carefully safeguarded. Democratic Socialism is committed to freedom of speech and debate, the freedom to organize independent trade unions, women’s groups, political parties, and other formations — recognizing these as essential bulwarks against the dangers of an intrusive state. It is committed to a freedom of religion that acknowledges the rights of those for whom spiritual concerns are central.
Richmond Democratic Socialists of America believe in the power of community and rooting ourselves in community.
We are socialists because we are developing a concrete strategy for achieving that vision. We are building a visible socialist presence within the broad democratic left.
